Musculoskeletal
In this section you'll
find extensive information on leading Musculoskeletal articles and products to help you on your way to success.
Musculoskeletal System and Musculoskeletal Pain
The musculoskeletal system consists of the skeletal system - bones and joints, which is the union of two or more bones - and the skeletal muscle system. The skeletal or voluntary/striated muscle is the most abundant tissue in the human body, producing movement.
Each skeletal-muscle fiber is roughly cylindrical, contains many nuclei, and is crossed by alternating light and dark bands called striations. Fibers bind together, via connective tissue, into bundles; and these bundles, in turn, bind together to form muscles. Thus, skeletal muscles are composite structures composed of many muscle fibers, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Skeletal muscles are controlled by the somatic nervous system.
The musculoskeletal system provides basic functions that are essential to life. For example the musculoskeletal system
protects the brain and internal organs
maintains upright posture
and many more essential functions.
Musculoskeletal pain is pain that affects the muscles, ligaments, and tendons, along with the bones. The causes of musculoskeletal pain are varied. Muscle tissue can be damaged with the wear and tear of daily activities. Trauma to an area (such as auto accidents, falls, fractures etc.) also can cause musculoskeletal pain.
Postural strain, repetitive movements, overuse, and prolonged immobilization are other causes of pain. Poor body mechanics and posture, along with stress, can also cause increased muscle tension, which then contributes to the pain. Inactivity as a result of pain can gradually lead to muscle weakness and de-conditioning, contributing to the pain.
For acute musculoskeletal pain, different types of manual therapy, or mobilization, can be used to treat people. These techniques have been shown to speed recovery. Exercise is also an important component of treating chronic musculoskeletal pain. Stretching and strengthening exercise are important. Since pain and inactivity can lead to de-conditioning, aerobic exercise is important to improving your cardiovascular and muscular endurance, and depending on the type of exercise, can lead to increases in strength as well.
Other treatments might include:
Acupuncture or acupressure
Yoga
Pilates Training
Relaxation techniques
Therapeutic massage
Physical therapy
Osteopathic manipulation
Chiropractic care
